
Summary: January 12, 2005: Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the signing of a peace accord in Senegal (Brussels)
The European Union and its Member States welcome the signing on 30 December 2004 of a peace accord between the Government of Senegal and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC).
This accord reflects the determination of the parties concerned to find a final political solution to the Casamance crisis. With the conviction that this is an important stage in the process of reconciliation, the European Union and its Member States would encourage the various players to apply rapidly all the measures adopted on 30 December 2004. The European Union reiterates its determination to contribute to the reconstruction of the region.
The Candidate Countries Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
