Summary: December 27, 2004: Statement by Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, on the Presidential Elections in Ukraine (Brussels)
Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), made today the following statement with regard to the repeat of the second round of the presidential elections in Ukraine:
"I have been following very closely the rerun of the Presidential elections in Ukraine. The preliminary findings of the International Election Observation Mission led by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), establish that the conduct of the 26 December election process brought Ukraine substantially closer to meeting OSCE election commitments and Council of Europe and other European standards. We are now waiting for the official announcement of the final results by
the Central Electoral Commission.
I wish first and foremost to congratulate the Ukrainian people: they were aware of the importance of these elections for the future of their country and have responded accordingly. The electoral turnout was very high and the incidents were few. I also wish to pay tribute to the leaders of Ukraine. They have acted with a high degree of responsibility to set their country firmly in the path of democracy. They will have to continue working together for the prosperity of their country in good
relations with its neighbours. The European Council has stressed the strategic importance of Ukraine as a key neighbour and partner of the European Union. I am looking forward to working towards the enhancement of our relations."
