Summary: December 16, 2004: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, supports the decisions taken by Paddy Ashdown in favour of cooperation with the ICTY (Brussels)
The decisions taken today by the European Union Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Paddy Ashdown, are an important step towards clearing away elements obstructing the cooperation with the ICTY (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia). At the same time, today's unannounced inspections of several military facilities in the Han Pijesak area by EUFOR / Operation Althea further testify to EU's determination to ensure compliance with the Dayton Agreement.
The European Union remains firmly committed to ensuring full co-operation with the ICTY, including bringing indicted war criminals to justice in The Hague. This is a fundamental obligation under the Peace Agreement. Without significant progress on ICTY co-operation, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will be unable to proceed to the next stage in European integration.
