EUHR Solana met with the President of Serbia-Montenegro

Summary: December 14, 2004: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, met with Svetozar MAROVIC, President of Serbia-Montenegro (Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), met today with Svetozar MAROVIC, the President of Serbia and Montenegro.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss EU Serbia- Montenegro relations as well as the latest developments in the Balkans. In particular the leaders examined three main issues:

The High Representative stressed the importance for Serbia and Montenegro of improving relations without delay with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in order to further progress towards the European Union.

Mr. Solana reiterated that the EU remained strongly committed to the State Union. The decision on the "twin-track" approach in view of a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) was a genuine effort to facilitate progress towards the EU and represented an opportunity not to be missed for Serbia and Montenegro. He underlined that all existing open issues should be solved through dialogue among its leaders.

On Kosovo, the High Representative underlined the need for a constructive attitude on all sides. He stressed that progress on decentralisation, minority protection and returns continued to be a high priority for the EU and reiterated his strong support for the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations.
