EU Presidency declaration on presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana

The European Union welcomes the democratic and transparent manner in which the Presidential and Parliamentary elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2004 and wishes to extend its warmest congratulations to His Excellency Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor on the occasion of his new term as President of the Republic of Ghana.

The Ghanaian people have given a clear sign of their commitment to the further consolidation of democracy in their country. The high turnout and the orderly and peaceful conduct of the elections demonstrate the maturity of the democratic process in Ghana.

The European Union congratulates all political parties and civil society representatives for their contribution to the smooth conduct of the polling. The European Union would like in particular to commend the Electoral Commission for the manner in which it has carried out its constitutional duties.

The European Union looks forward to continuing its partnership with Ghana and expresses its willingness to contribute to the political, economic and social development of the country.

The Candidate Countries Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
