Commission statement on World AIDS day

The Commission will make a statement on World Aids Day. The international day of action on HIV and AIDS takes place every year on 1 December.

The Commission's policy on health, AIDS, population and development emphasises the close relationship between poor health and poverty, and recognises the importance of improved health outcomes for economic growth and development. Health features prominently in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the United Nations' Millennium Summit in September 2000 with three out of eight goals:

Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five child mortality rate.
Reduce by three-quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality rate.

Have halted by 2015 and begun to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, and the incidence of malaria and other major diseases.
