
Summary: October 20, 2004: Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the Inauguration of the New President of the Republic of Indonesia (Brussels)
The European Union would like to extend its congratulations to Mr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on his inauguration today as the first directly elected President of the Republic of Indonesia. This is a truly historic occasion. The broad support of the Indonesian people has provided Mr Yudhoyono with a strong mandate. Hopefully this will enable him to tackle Indonesia's political, social and economic challenges.
The European Union stands ready to intensify its relations and cooperation with the Republic of Indonesia, which it considers a major partner.
To underline the importance it attaches to its relations with the Republic of Indonesia the European Union will send a Ministerial Troika mission to Jakarta on 27 and 28 October 2004. The Dutch Foreign Minister, Bernard Bot, will head the mission. The delegation will further consist of representatives of the incoming Presidency (Luxembourg), the Council Secretariat and the European Commission.
The Candidate Countries Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Croatia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland and Liechtenstein, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia continues to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
