EUHR Solana welcomes Presidential elections in Afghanistan

Summary: October 11, 2004: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, welcomes Presidential elections in Afghanistan (Brussels)

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), expressed satisfaction at the way in which the Presidential elections took place in Afghanistan on Saturday, 9 October 2004:

"I would like to congratulate the people of Afghanistan for the enthusiasm with which they have embraced democracy in the first direct election of their President in their country's history. This election represents a historic milestone in the dynamic and ongoing reconstruction and transformation of Afghanistan, on the basis of the transition process launched in Bonn nearly three years ago.

The European Union's special envoy to Afghanistan, Francesc Vendrell, is on site and through him I will follow closely the result of the voting, which is expected to be available in the coming weeks. The European Union will continue to do its utmost to support and assist the people of Afghanistan and their future President in their efforts to build a democratic, stable and prosperous Afghanistan.
