Summary: September 21, 2001: The preparatory process of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) starts in Geneva.
Ministers of the 55 member States of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will meet in Geneva on 24-25 September 2001 to prepare the World Summit on Sustainable Development that will take place in Johannesburg (South Africa) in September 2002 at the level of Heads of State and Government.
The aim of the meeting is to review the progress made since the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio Conference) in 1992, and to outline key issues, priorities and follow up in order to provide input for the Summit. To highlight the importance of this event and to give a clear signal towards other regions in the world, the meeting will be followed by a ministerial declaration.
The European Union, represented by Olivier Deleuze, Belgian State Secretary for Energy and Sustainable Development, supports a strong declaration, based as much as possible on the European Strategy for Sustainable Development decided at the EU Summit in Göteborg last June.
