
Summary: August 19, 2004: Visit of EU Presidency and EU special representative to Burundi (Brussels)
Dutch development cooperation minister Agnes van Ardenne and the EU special representative for the Great Lakes region, Aldo Ajello, are to visit Burundi on Sunday 22 August. On behalf of the Dutch EU presidency, Minister Van Ardenne wants to highlight the progress made with the peace process following the terrible events last Friday night.
Van Ardenne and Ajello will hold talks in Burundi with President Domitien Ndayizeye, foreign minister Térence Sinunguruza and defence minister Vincent Nijungeko. Talks with the UN special representative in Burundi, Carolyn McAskie, are due to be held in Nairobi on Monday.
In Nairobi Minister Van Ardenne will also hold talks in preparation for the Great Lakes Conference, to be held in Dar es Salaam in November. The conference is intended to lay the basis for agreements between the participating countries on conflict prevention and ways of safeguarding peace and security for the people of these countries.
