The European Commission approved today € 3 million for a project which aims to ensure that former East Timorese refugees who have decided to remain in Indonesia, either in West Timor or elsewhere, are successfully integrated into that society and are provided with the means to become economically self-reliant.
More specifically the project aims to enhance living conditions, ensure food security by facilitating access to cultivable land and assist access to income generating activities such as vegetable growing and livestock breeding in garden plots. It will provide former refugees with proper housing, primary health care, water and safe sanitation and improve the availability and quality of basic education in local schools, particularly for girls. Finally, it will support reconciliation between the
former refugee communities and the West Timorese host communities, as well as with the people and Government of Timor Leste.
The project will be implemented by United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
