EUHR Solana writes to Russian Foreign Minister on deteriorating situation in Transnistria

Summary: July 30, 2004: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, writes to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey LAVROV on deteriorating situation in Transnistria (Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFPS), wrote today to Sergey LAVROV, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, concerning the latest developments in the region of Transnistria, Moldova, in view of the important role played by the Russian Federation as a key mediator in the "five-sided format talks" aimed at reaching a settlement between the Moldovan government and the Transnistrian leadership.

In his letter, the High Representative underlined the shared views between the European Union and the Russian Federation on the need to avoid any possible escalation of the tensions between the parties involved, and in particular the need to put an end to all actions against the Moldovan schools.

Javier Solana asked Foreign Minister Lavrov to persuade the Transnistrian leadership in Tiraspol to halt their campaign against the Moldovan schools, and to return to the settlement negotiations in the "five-sided format talks" without delay.

The High Representative remains in close contact with the Moldovan leadership in Chisinau, and has urged them to refrain from any measures that would lead to a further escalation of the situation. Javier Solana had already conveyed this message to Moldovan President Voronin when they spoke on the phone on Wednesday this week.

Javier Solana stated the European Union's availability to cooperate constructively with the Russian Federation to promote a solution to the difficult situation in Moldavia.
