The Presidency of the European Union has the sad duty to extend to the Austrian nation and government the most sincere condolences following the sudden death of President Thomas Klestil.

His successful presidency ended tragically last night, barely two days before he would have turned over his office. With the passing of Dr. Klestil, Austria has lost a statesman of exceptional stature. He will be remembered for his great efforts for European integration.
