Summary: May 28, 2004: Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, welcomes the agreement on Darfur, Sudan (Brussels)

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) made the following comments on the signature in Addis Abeba today of an Agreement on the modalities for the cease-fire in the Darfur region:

"I warmly welcome the signature this afternoon of the agreement on the modalities of the cease-fire in Darfur under the sponsorship of the African Union. I congratulate the African Union and Commissioner Djinnit for this breakthrough.

This is an opportunity to stabilise the situation in Darfur and to end the terrible suffering of populations in the region. I now call on all parties concerned to respect the cease-fire fully.

The European Union has supported the African Union all through its work towards this agreement and will remain committed to bringing this process to a successful end."
