EUHR Solana expresses distress about today's events in Rafah

Summary: May 19, 2004: Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the CFSP, expresses distress about today's events in Rafah (Brussels)

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, condemned today the latest developments in Rafah, Gaza strip, which have resulted in the killing of many Palestinians.

"I am deeply distressed by the recent Israeli action in Gaza which appears to have left a large number of casualties among Palestinian civilians, including children. I condemn such indiscriminate actions.

The steadily mounting death toll and the continuing destruction of houses in Gaza cannot but disturb all those who want to promote a settlement in the Middle East. This is not the way to fight terrorism effectively, nor to prepare for a successful disengagement from Gaza in the conditions defined by the Quartet. As I said yesterday, the roadmap must be respected, and as the European Union has always said, the Geneva conventions must be respected.
