Europe Day 2004 - Celebrating EU Enlargement through Art, benefiting Adopt-A-Minefield

EUROPE DAY 2004: CELEBRATING EU ENLARGEMENT THROUGH ART, BENEFITING ADOPT-A-MINEFIELD
Every year, the European Commission's Delegation to the United Nations in New York holds a Europe Day reception around May 9 ("Schuman Day"), which commemorates the founding of what is now the European Union (EU).
But this year is no normal year. Just last week, on May 1, 2004, the EU welcomed ten new countries as Member States, an historic moment bringing the post-war division of Europe to a peaceful conclusion, and laying the foundations for lasting peace, stability and prosperity for future generations.
To mark this great achievement, the Europe Day celebration will take place on
May 10, 2004 (from 6:00 to 8:00 pm), in an "enlarged" fashion, in the large atrium adjacent to the
Dahesh Museum (580 Madison Ave, between 56th-57th St.), where one will enter the reception. Furthermore, the reception will feature an
art exhibit of artists from
all the EU Member States and candidate countries, who are either resident in - or connected to - New York City.
The artists and the art were identified through the efforts of
EU Member State Consulates here in New York, and through the
New York Academy of Art, which is also curating the show.
Donated by the artists, the mural works of art will be part of a
silent auction, the proceeds of which will benefit
Adopt-a-Minefield, a public-private partnership between the UN Association of the US, the United Nations, Ted Turner's Better World Fund and the US State Department to clear minefields across the globe, to provide assistance to landmine survivors and to raise awareness of the global landmine crisis (
http://www.landmines.org/campaign/index-cam.asp ).
So, this year's Europe Day reception celebrates Europe's diversity and creativity, its connection to New York and the United Nations, and its vocation to make the world a better, safer place.
