EUHR Solana congratulates South African President for election results

Summary: April 16, 2004: Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, congratulates South African President, Tabo MBEKI, for election results (Brussels)

Javier Solana, High Representative for the EU's common foreign and security policy, sent today a message of congratulations to the President of South Africa, Tabo MBEKI, for the election results of his party, the African National Congress (ANC):

"Although votes are still being counted, it appears clear that your party, the African National Congress, is heading for an impressive victory in the third democratic elections since the end of apartheid. I want to congratulate you wholeheartedly on this result.

The high turnout and the peaceful elections are great achievements for your young but vibrant democratic society. All South Africans have played their part in this success, but you and former President Mandela deserve special credit.

The outcome of the elections sets a promising perspective to continue the full transformation of the South African nation and to successfully tackle the social and economic challenges. I therefore wish to reiterate today my eagerness to continue working with you in strengthening the partnership between the European Union and South Africa.

I am convinced that together the EU and South Africa can make an important contribution to the prosperity, peace and security of the African continent and of the international community as a whole."
