The European Union welcomes the successful holding of El Salvador's presidential election on 21 March 2004. It wholeheartedly congratulates the winning candidate, Mr. Antonio Saca.
The high voter turnout for the poll, which was freely and fairly conducted, shows the political maturity of the Salvadoran people and confirms its commitment to peace and democracy.
The European Union will continue with its support for the consolidation of democracy in El Salvador and for the country's development.
The Acceding Countries Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia, the Candidate Countries Romania and Turkey, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this
declaration.
