Summary: February 4, 2004: Statement by the Witnesses to the Algiers Agreement Welcoming the Appointment of UN Special Envoy to Ethiopia and Eritrea (New York)
Algeria, the African Union, the European Union, and the United States, as Witnesses to the Algiers Agreement, welcome and fully support the appointment by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, of Mr. Lloyd Axworthy as Special Envoy to Ethiopia and Eritrea.
As Witnesses to the Algiers Agreement, we firmly support Mr. Axworthy in his important mission. We declare, once again, our commitment to peace, security and stability in the relations between the sovereign nations of Eritrea and Ethiopia and our support for the full implementation of the Algiers Agreement. In this context, the Witnesses reaffirm the final and binding nature of the Boundary Commission's decision as underscored in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1507 of 12 September
2003 and the Security Council's Press Statement of 7 January 2004.
We urge both President Isaias of Eritrea and Prime Minister Meles of Ethiopia to engage in early discussions with the Special Envoy, and call upon the two nations to engage also in a broad dialogue with a view to normalising their relations.
