EUHR Solana met with Albanian Prime Minster

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, met today with Fatos NANO, Prime Minister of Albania. The meeting allowed for an exchange of views on EU-Albania relations, the internal situation in the country and the whole Balkan region.

The High Representative reiterated the support of the EU to the European perspective of Albania. He encouraged Prime Minister Nano to intensify the efforts of his government to carry out the necessary reforms and maintain internal political stability as preconditions for advancing with the Stabilisation and Association Process, which remains the framework for the European course of the Western Balkan countries. Javier Solana placed particular emphasis on the imperative for rapid and tangible progress in the fight against organised crime and corruption.

Dr Solana also congratulated Mr Nano and his government for the constructive attitude of Albania in the region and encouraged the Prime Minister to maintain the constructive role of Albania as regional co-operation remains essential to effectively address regional outstanding issues and is an indispensable element of the road of Albania towards European integration.

"Albania is a country that is making good progress towards internal stability, which we would like to see further developed. It has been playing a constructive role in the region, helping with the integration process of the Western Balkans".
