EUHR Solana welcomes adoption of new Afghan Constitution

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), welcomed yesterday's adoption of a new Constitution by the Loya Jirga in Afghanistan:

"I welcome the adoption of the new Afghan Constitution by the Loya Jirga.

The new Constitution forms the basic foundation for a sovereign and democratic Afghanistan. This important step will help to determine the way ahead in the spirit of the Bonn process, in particular through paving the way for the holding of Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

I congratulated today President Karzai for the successful outcome of the Constitutional Loya Jirga. I assured him of the EU's wish to further enhance its assistance to the Afghan government."
