Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, will visit Washington D.C . and New York from 16 to 19 December 2003.
In Washington D.C., Javier Solana will meet with Richard Armitage, Deputy Secretary of State and with William Burns, Assistant Secretary of State. He will also meet with Richard Hadley, Deputy National Security Advisor, and with other top officials of the US Administration.
Also in Washington D.C., Javier Solana will address the European Institute (16 December at 19:30, local time) on the occasion of the presentation of the Transatlantic Leadership Award to Republican Senator Chuck Hagel from Nebraska. The award is presented to leaders from both sides of the Atlantic in recognition of their commitment to the advancement of the transatlantic relationship.
On 19 December, Javier Solana will meet with Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary General, at the UN headquarters in New York.

Washington DC-On December 16, The European Institute will present the Transatlantic Leadership Award to Senator Chuck Hagel, (R-Nebraska), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's Subcommittee on International Policy, Export and Trade Promotion and Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee's Subcommittee on International Trade and Finance. Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security
Policy, the 2000 recipient will come from Brussels to present the Award. The Transatlantic Leadership Award recognizes by turns one American leader and one European leader who has demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of the transatlantic relationship. Throughout this troubling year, Senator Hagel has been an outspoken proponent of the need for good transatlantic relations, and an advocate for the common strategic agenda.
Senator Hagel will present his views on the challenges facing the transatlantic partnership. Dr. Solana will relay his perspective on the series of strategic meetings that are now taking place in Brussels. (See attached article from the Financial Times of December 5).
Chuck Hagel is the Senior Senator from Nebraska and sits on three committees: Foreign Relations; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; and the Select Committee on Intelligence. Hagel is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations International Economic Policy, Export and Trade Promotion Subcommittee and the Senate Banking International Trade and Finance Subcommittee. Hagel also serves as the Co-chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.
