Summary: November 27, 2003: Commissioner Fischler at FAO conference in Rome: Discussions to focus on re-launch of WTO farm talks (Brussels/Rome)

From 1-2 December, Franz Fischler, EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries will participate in the 32nd Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. In Rome, the Commissioner will deliver a keynote speech on the state of the WTO agriculture talks, speak at the FAO plenary session and hold a number of meetings especially with ministers from developing countries. Meeting are scheduled with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, Thailand, Brazil, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Morocco, India, Bangladesh, the US, Canada and New Zealand.

"In Rome, I will seize the opportunity to explore avenues with our trading partners, in particular with developing countries, on how to kick-start the WTO talks on agriculture. Furthermore, I will use my visit to lay out Europe's position after Cancun", Mr. Fischlersaid.
