President Prodi's message to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, PM of Turkey

Summary: November 21, 2003: Message of President Prodi to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, PM of Turkey (Brussels)

"Dear Prime Minister,

I was profoundly shocked to hear of today's terrible bomb blasts in Istanbul. On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, allow me to express my deepest and most sincere condolences to the Government of Turkey. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to many families who have been bereaved by this despicable and cowardly act, which I condemn absolutely.

On this sad occasion the European Commission repeats its full rejection of any form of terrorism and hopes that the perpetrators of this massacre will be brought to justice. We in the international community must continue to do all we can to combat the scourge of terror, in all its manifestations. The Commission reiterates its full support for the efforts of the Turkish Government to continue democratic reforms.

With sincere respects.

Romano Prodi"
