EU Presidency declaration on Cambodia

Summary: August 16, 2001: Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on Cambodia.

The European Union welcomes the adoption of legislation in Cambodia to establish a Khmer Rouge Tribunal. This landmark decision will permit the prosecution of those individuals most responsible for the serious crimes committed under the Khmer Rouge and will allow the Government to continue to promote peace and stability in Cambodia.

The European Union fully supports the efforts of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the United Nations to bring justice for those who suffered the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975-79, and urges the Royal Cambodian Government to continue its efforts to ensure that a tribunal, supported by the United Nations and meeting international standards of justice, fairness and due process, becomes a reality as soon as possible.

The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration.
