Mission of the European Troika in Kenya

Summary: September 17, 2003: Mission of the European Troika in Kenya (Rome)

The European troika is in Nairobi from today to Friday to demonstrate the support of the European Union for new democratic elections in Kenya.

The troika is led by the Italian Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Mantica, who is representing the Italian duty presidency of the EU, his Irish counterpart Tom Kitt, and the Vice Director of the European Commission for Cooperation, Athanassios Theodorakis.

The troika will have meetings with President Mwai Kibaki and with some of the most important state officials. Topics will include the fight against corruption, the consolidation of the democratic process through institutional and economic reforms, the war on AIDS and international terrorism and the defence of human rights.

All these subjects are considered to be essential to guarantee finance from the EU, which a few days ago approved a 15-year support plan worth 225 million euros.

Kenya is the fourth subsaharan country - after Angola, Nigeria, and South Africa - with whom the European bloc has started off a dialogue of this kind during the Italian duty presidency of the EU.

The troika is a group of the three current past and future EU presidents.
