Summary: September 11, 2003: Message by President Ciampi to President Bush on the anniversary of September 11, 2001 (Italy)
Two years after the terrorist attacks that so profoundly struck the United States I wish, personally and in the name of the Italian people, to express our deep participation in the pain of the families, the cities and the entire country. I would also like to reiterate my admiration for the courage and spirit of sacrifice and cohesion demonstrated by the American people during that unthinkable tragedy which in me evokes sentiments of unmitigated shock and solidarity. September 11 has entered
the historical consciousness of the international community and the memory of those events will remain an indelible warning for present and future generations. Such a savage crime, such a heinous offence against all humanity can only be fought by means of the mobilisation of the entire civil society, regardless of ethnic or religious allegiance.
Only in this way can terrorism be defeated and the causes that feed it eradicated. With this heavy threat looming over the 21st century the unified intention of the two shores of the Atlantic Ocean represents the aggregating nucleus of this mobilisation and a fundamental instrument for effectively combating terrorism. The more the European Union becomes united in promoting global interests and responsibilities, the more it will contribute to the success of this action. The more the United
States and the European Union operate in the spirit of reciprocal trust, able to listen and collaborate on resolving the major problems of our times, the more progress we will make in the elimination of this scourge. The most profound and vibrant bonds of friendship that unite the United States and Italy and the awareness of how our fifty-year long collaboration has contributed to the progress of the international community further stimulates our joint action in a mission of civilization.
