Declaration by PM Silvio Berlusconi on the anniversary of September 11

The 11th of September will remain in the memory of all civilised populations as a day on which terrorist barbarism sank to its basest and most senseless depths.

Our thoughts go out to the innocent victims and to the heroes - the firemen and police officers - who sacrificed themselves to save human lives. We dedicate our battle against terrorism to them.

The great worldwide coalition led by the United States has already achieved significant victories. In Afghanistan, as also in Iraq, there is hope now for liberty and democracy. And it is precisely the spread of liberty and democracy that is the most effective antidote for terrorism.
