EUHR Solana's statement following the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello in Baghdad

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, expresses his sadness following news of the death of UNSG Special Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello in the Baghdad bombing, which claimed the lives of several UN staff.

"I want to express my deep sadness following the news of Sergio Vieira de Mello's death in the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. He was a great servant of the international community, for which it is a huge loss tonight. He was also a close friend with whom I had worked in many areas, including the Balkans. He made an extraordinary contribution to the cause of peace and of the United Nations. I extend my deepest condolences and my sympathy to his family, as well as to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan."

HR Solana is conveying his sadness and sympathy following the events in Baghdad in a message to Secretary-General Annan.
