Following his visit to the Great Lakes Region, Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, will present a report to the United Nations Security Council on Friday, 18 July on the EU-led 'Artemis' operation deployed in Bunia (Ituri, DRC).
The EU-led military operation 'Artemis' and the recent visit of the High Representative to the region highlight the strong commitment of the European Union to the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and to regional stability.
The European Union military operation in Bunia is conducted in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1484 of 30 May 2003, which authorises the deployment of an interim emergency multinational force in Bunia until 1 September 2003. The European military force works in close co-ordination with MONUC. It is aimed, inter alia, at contributing to the stabilisation of the security conditions and the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Bunia.
