Summary: July 16, 2003: Kyoto: Clini, Italy to focus on Russia and U.S. (Rome)
Italy will seek to focus this weekend's meeting of European Union environment and energy ministers on convincing Russia to sign the Kyoto Protocol and keeping dialogue with the US open, a top environment ministry official said here today.
Environment ministry Director General Corrado Clini added that as EU duty president, Italy would not give up on the US, even though it had refused to implement the protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.
Speaking at a press conference organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature, which asked that Italy make climate and energy issues key priorities for its duty presidency, he stressed that "the Italian government is making every effort possible" with Russia and the US.
According to Clini, the semester's objective is to "integrate environment and energy policies with those of other sectors, so that the environment becomes part of development policies rather than shackling them".
