Summary: July 1, 2003: The Council of the European Union extends travel ban on persons involved in evasion of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (Brussels)
The Council of the European Union adopted a Decision extending the list of persons subject to a travel ban because of their involvement in the evasion of justice under the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (doc. 10431/03). The Decision will be published in the Official Journal today (OJ L 162).
The Decision establishes a new list of persons subject to the visa ban, as set out in Common Position 2003/280/CFSP. This requires Member States to take measures to prevent the entry or transit of those engaged in activities that help persons at large to evade justice for crimes for which the ICTY has indicted them, or otherwise acting in a manner which could obstruct effective implementation of the ICTY's mandate.
The Council can update the list upon request of a Member State or the Commission. The European Union is furthermore encouraging third countries to adopt similar measures in order to maximize the impact of the visa ban.
Adopted in April, the common position applies for an initial renewable period of 12 months and will be kept under constant review.
