The European Council welcomed the unprecedented and historic milestone achieved at its summit in Copenhagen on December 12-13, 2002 to overcome the legacy of conflict and division in Europe: namely, the conclusion of membership negotiations with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia.
