EUHR Solana's statement on events in the Bureij refugee camp

Summary: December 6, 2002: Statement by Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for CFSP, on the recent events in the Bureij refugee camp (Brussels)

Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, reacting to the tragic events in the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip early this morning, made the following comments:

"I have learnt with consternation about the Israeli military operation in the Bureij Palestinian refugee camp this morning. A massive intervention of that type in a densely populated urban area can only lead to the loss of innocent lives, as was the case today. This sort of excessive use of force cannot be conducive to the lowering of tension and an end to the cycle of violence, towards which all should be working.

I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, who were celebrating the end of Ramadan and who are now in mourning."
