EU Presidency Statement - Declaration of independence to colonial countries

Summary: October 16, 2001: Explanation of vote by the European Union given by Mr. S. Schelstraete. Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples by the specialized agencies and the international institutions associated with the United Nations (New York)

Mr. Chairman,

I have the honor to speak on behalf of the European Union.

Mr. Chairman,

The European Union renews its support for the specialized agencies in their efforts to offer their assistance to Non?Self?Governing Territories in the humanitarian, technical and educational fields.

We nevertheless consider, Mr. Chairman, that the statute of those agencies must be scrupulously respected, and that is why the Member States of the European Union abstained in the vote on this resolution.

Thank you Mr. Chairman.
