Summary: October 17, 2002: European Commission to support Indonesia's fight against terrorism (Brussels)
The European Commission is preparing to assist Indonesia in its fight against terrorism in the wake of the appalling attack that has killed and injured so many innocent civilians, including Europeans, in Bali.
The EU shares the resolve of the Indonesian government to reinforce efforts to combat terrorism by implementing measures foreseen in UNSC resolution 1373.
Current assistance to Indonesia, which includes a focus on promoting good governance, could be made available to support these efforts. In particular, the EU would like to provide help in addressing the problems of money laundering and terrorist financing. If the government of Indonesia agrees, the European Commission is ready to finance a team of experts (through the Rapid Reaction Mechanism) to give urgent advice on how this might most effectively be done.
