
Summary: October 9, 2002: Declaration of the Presidency, on behalf of the European Union, on the situation in Venezuela (Brussels)
The European Union continues to follow with attention and concern the highly polarized political situation in Venezuela.
The European Union reiterates its full support of the efforts being undertaken by the tripartite working group integrated by the OAS, UNDP and the Carter Centre in facilitating a national dialogue between the Government of Venezuela and the "Coordinadora Democratica" as well as other relevant sectors of society.
The European Union also welcomes the important role of the Secretary General of the OAS in pursuing a peaceful, constitutional and democratic solution to the political crisis in Venezuela. All political and social actors in Venezuela are encouraged to create the appropriate spirit of tolerance in order to consolidate a climate of reconciliation among the people of Venezuela.
The European Union emphasizes the importance of solving major problems through dialogue and urges the government, the political parties and civil society to commit themselves to find solutions through negotiation and broad national consensus in due respect of the constitution of Venezuela, universal human rights and the democratic values expressed in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries, members of the European Economic Area align themselves with this declaration.
