European Union Mexico Civil Society Dialogue

Summary: August 2, 2002: First Forum "European Union Mexico Civil Society Dialogue" (Brussels)

On 26th November 2002, The European Commission and the Mexican Government are supporting the holding of a Civil Society Forum with representatives of European and Mexican Civil Society in order to launch a debate and to exchange points of view on the implementation of the Global Agreement, as well as to strengthen the participation of the Civil Society from both parties in the political, economic and co-operation relations between the European Union and Mexico.

Relations between the European Union and Mexico are governed by the Economic Partnership, Political Co-ordination and Co-operation Agreement (Global Agreement) signed by both parties on 8 December 1997 that came into force on 1 October 2000.

The Global Agreement institutionalises the political dialogue and increases the areas and instruments of co-operation between both parties. In its commercial pillar, it creates a free trade area for goods (Decision n° 2/2000 that came into force 01/07/2000) and for services (Decision n° 2/2001 that came into force 01/03/2001).

This forum takes place two years after the coming into force of the Global Agreement, in a context of promotion and strengthening of our bilateral relations.

The forum will last one day and will be divided into:

Participation is open to the representatives of European and Mexican organisations that form part of civil society, such as NGOs, Trade Unions, the Business Community (employers' associations), the Academic and Scientific Community (universities, research bodies, etc.) and other actors not included in the public sector.
