Ellen Margrethe Løj

Ellen Margrethe Løj was born in Gedesby, Denmark on October 17, 1948.

She entered the Danish Foreign Service in 1973 after graduating in Economics from the University of Copenhagen.

Her career in the Foreign Service includes postings to New York as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations (1977-1980) covering 2nd Committee, to Brussels as Counsellor at the Permanent Representation of Denmark to the European Communities (1982-1985) responsible for trade issues, and to Israel as Ambassador of Denmark (1989-1992). In May 2001 she was appointed Permanent Representative of Denmark to the United Nations in New York.

In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen she has mainly served in the economic and development field and has from 1996-2001 been head of the South Group in the Ministry. The South Group is responsible for political, economic, and trade relations with Africa, Asia, and Latin America including the administration of Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA).

Throughout her career she has travelled widely, primarily in developing countries, and participated in the Danish delegations to several international meetings and United Nations conferences.

Ellen Margrethe Løj served on the Supervisory Board of The Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries and the Supervisory Board of the Investment Fund for Central and Eastern Europe from 1994-1996. From 1998-2001 she was a member of the Supervisory Board of the Danish/German ferry company, Scandlines.
