EU pledge at FYROM Donors' meeting

Summary: March 12, 2002: EU pledge at former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Donors' meeting (Brussels)

The European Union has responded swiftly to meet the needs of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, to help it through the recent crisis and, now, to help set the country firmly on the road to recovery. The European Commission's assistance is designed to meet the specific requirements arising out of last year's crisis, but also the needs that existed even before then. Both our emergency help, and our longer-term assistance, will help to stabilize the country, and promote the reforms needed for its steady integration into the European mainstream. The total contribution of the European Commission to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in the period 2001 and 2002 is EUR188 million.

Our specific pledge against the needs covered by today's Donors' Meeting is EUR104m. Of which:

Macro-financial assistance EUR68m (28m grant and 40m loan)
Reconstruction/rehabilitation EUR32.54m (EUR18.54m committed 2001; EUR14.00m committed 2002)
Support for measures arising from the Framework Agreement - EUR3.53m in 2002

The remainder of our assistance to FYROM over the period 2001-2002 amounts to EUR84m. Of which:

Economic development EUR67m (EUR42.5m committed 2001 (from CARDS budget); EUR24.5m committed 2002)
Support for measures arising from the Framework Agreement outside terms of the Donors' meeting EUR5m
Humanitarian aid EUR12m

A good deal of this assistance, especially that which relates to extremely urgent needs, such as the repair/re-building of damaged housing over the winter, is being, or has already been, implemented on the ground.

The above figures do not include the substantial bilateral contributions being made by EU Member States. The European Union is by far the biggest provider of assistance to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
